The first unit has 4 brake cylinders per side per truck. What do the 2 center ones do? Are they active with the 2 outboard cylinders? Seems like a lot of air braking power if there are 8 cylinders total per truck.

The center axle is unpowered (these are A-1-A trucks), and the two center cylinders are for lifting that center axle to increase traction at times. See more here: https://www.american-rails.com/es44c4.html
