Hello, This may sound a strange question, but in the photo, is the train going left to right or right to left? If it is "assisting", I would have thought it would be at the rear, pushing. This means it is going left to right. The real puzzle is if that is the case, why is the smoke going in direction of travel? If the direction of travel is right to left, why is an "assisting" loco at the front of the train?

Love these sorts of historic photos. Interesting that a flagship fast passenger train got the same low-drivered, low-speed helper (albeit a namesake Santa Fe type) as presumably a run-of-the-mill freight train.
