I like this paint scheme better than the big flag. A much better perspective.

I like it as well! But I do wish they had kept the winged shield on the nose, as it was possibly the best nose logo on any railroad. I enjoyed taking nosy shots of UP diesels more than on other roads. And I didn't mind the lightning stripe, either, but if it was more costly to apply, so be it. But to really improve this scheme: (a) paint the trucks silver again, and (b) spend a bit more for the more highly reflective red Scotchliteâ„¢ striping for the side sill. (I've heard that 3M produces a red Scotchliteâ„¢ that meets the FRA's reflectivity requirement, but that is "too expensive" for the railroads. But I cannot prove this...)

May I respectfully disagree with both Messrs. Roth and Walker. As a military retiree, I felt proud every time I saw one of the big flags on display. Having said that, yes, the less than perfect weather conditions and other factors made the large flag motif hard to maintain. Agree on the winged emblem on the nose, but I have no opinion on the silver trucks. And I also agree that some reflector material would make travel around trains safer. Here in Missouri where I live, UP has some very rural trackage and safety is the most important thing to observe.

Jonathan - Yes, I can kind of agree on that, but UP hated that if either a blown turbo, or other malfunction ruined the flag, it was barely visible thanks to it. I like the scheme, which I can also agree on the two previous comments, but the big shield logo wasn't necessary on the front. I would rather have the wing, it looked nicer rather than the shield. Otherwise, interesting scheme on my behalf.
