The Class 31s were used on regional passenger services back then (before electrification) and also the odd freight, seen here backed on to a parcels car. In the background is a Brush Class 47 - normally used on longer passenger services, but not normally to Cambridge (you would have been more likely to have seen an English Electric Class 37). The railway staff were fairly friendly to railfans back in 1983...not quite so much now!!
