It's easy to understand in this view that coal has been a major commodity for railroads since day one, seen here is empty coal train 572 (left) passing the tail end of loaded coal train 416.
Looking at this view up The Allegheny River you can see how Pittsburgh got its nickname, "The City of Bridges". Note, the westbound intermodal crossing NS's Fort Wayne Line Bridge.
