What appears to be the shortest and most overpowered Pacific Surfliner climbs the grade in Rose Canyon in San Diego, California, on May 30, 2009. The train's purpose? It was a Rescue train... Train 796 broke down at CP Tinkham (Irvine) when 453 crapped out. In order to meet the 12-axle minimum needed to activate signals and crossing gates, a rescue train with two locos (456/464) sandwiching a single coach (6800) was dispatched. This short train then towed disabled train 796 to San Diego. Once there, the ailing 453 was swapped for the 456 to operate the revenue train while the rescue train returned to LA with the dead engine, as seen here.
