After tackling the steepest grade on Cass Hill, at 8.7%, the former Meadow River Heisler #6 enters the station area at Whittaker Camp. At this location, the Cass Scenic Railroad State Park has numerous logging displays, including a fascinating Ligerwood Tower Skidder, similar to machines that were historically used to move logs on this very hill. The Whittaker Camp also has food and restroom facilities. It is used as a rest stop for the Cass Scenic Railroad's lengthy Bald Knob excursions, and as a final destination for the line's shorter excursions, such as their popular "Fiddles & Vittles" dinner trains.
For aficianados of geared steam engines, it's "almost heaven." Here are some scenes from the park's annual Railfan Weekends, as well as some private charters.
