BOO! Just in time for Halloween-a Ghoulish Graveyard GG-1! Ironically this self-same locomotive on January 15, 1953 was in a runaway! Coming into Washington Union Station with the PRR"s "The Federal" on the eve of Dwight D. Eisenhower's inauguration, the brakes failed, the locomotive crashed through the bumper posts and promptly collapsed the station floor landing in the basement. Unbelievably, no serious injuries occurred. The locomotive was cut into pieces, taken back to Altoona, rebuilt and gave another 30 years of service.
I myself rode behind the '76 in 1981 with a "Amtrak Farewell to the GG-1."
But that was then and this is now. '76 is not in great shape, not in the best part of town and has been vandalized repeatably. But museum forces have been hard at work for the locomotive looks much better than the last time I saw it. Wishing you a GG-1-Gory Holiday.
