Remarks & Notes |
Its 6:45am on a winter morning as 18-405 heads a Shosholoza Meyl (Trans Natal) across the Pentrich Viaduct and leaves Pietermaritzburg behind, for the final stage of the journey on to Durban. This train would have left Johannesburg's Park Station some thirteen hours earlier and the blue steam heater car would have been put to good use during the night with some pretty chilly spots enroute. Although this train still retains the name (Trans Natal) of one of the awesome passenger trains from the South African Railway days, it is now very much downgraded in many respects to "economy" travel - gone are the days of the highly rated sit down meals in a gorgeous Dining Car and the complete experience of having enjoyed the magic of an overnight train trip. |
