With a clear night forecast, the mission was to set out for a night photo at North Stratford, New Hampshire - literally just into New Hampshire from Vermont near the Canadian border - to capture the southbound St. Lawrence & Atlantic eastbound freight, #394. On the trip north I watched the in-truck thermometer begin to fall - soon passing 0-degrees F and continue the downward spiral to -16-degrees F as I set the flash units and camera up for the shot. This would be my equipment's first test at these extreme temps and soon the sound of horns echoed in the Upper Connecticut River Valley... As the train approached, the customary 'warning flash' was followed by a response from the crew aboard the train and in another instant - SLR 394 was captured passing the Grand Trunk Railway station in North Stratford, New Hampshire!
