Montana Rail Link’s gas local heads eastbound west of Weeksville, Montana, on May 10, 2010. Lead locomotive MRL No. 332 has an interesting history to be told. It began life as Erie Lackawanna EMD SDP45 No. 3657, but was soon rebuilt with a SD45-2 carbody and Dash 2 electrical upgrades by EL's Hornell Shops in 1973-74 following a wreck. It then went to Conrail, and later VMV, Morrison-Knudsen, finally ending up in Helm Leasing’s fleet. MRL acquired the locomotive in January 1998, arriving on the property still in MK dark blue and gold paint. It was then rebuilt and sent to CEECO in Tacoma, Washington on July 5, 2008 for repainting into MRL colors. When the locomotive returned to home rails on October 7, 2008, it was on HPASKCK with former EL employee, Dave Franz, as engineer between Spokane and Missoula.
