Eureka and Palisades No. 4 passes the Durango and Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad’s “Presidential Special” powered by K-28 No. 473 at Tacoma, Colorado, on August 23, 2003. Built by Alco in 1923, No. 473 is dressed up in 1950s movie paint for the occasion—while wood-burning 4-4-0 “Eureka,” complete with brass fittings and walnut cab, has its as-built by Baldwin in 1875 look after a lovingly restoration by Dan Markoff. Both make a colorful sight marching up the Animas Canyon on 3-foot rails of the D&SNG during Railfest 2003.
Not
