Completed in 1872, and out of service since the 1970's, the original bore at Big Bend is 6560 feet long, and lined with brick from end to end. This bore is best known for being home to the legend of John Henry. Notice you can only see a spec of daylight at the opposite end. The bore is straight, but has a hump in the middle. While no records exist, it was claimed that over 300 workers died during its construction.
