In another old restored Anscochrome, SP narrow gauge 4-6-0 No. 9 heads to Keeler on the very last regular use of steam on the entire SP system. Like an earlier picture of an ex-UP 0-6-0, this modest little machine outlasted the more modern cab-in-front articulateds and Daylight 4-8-4's. No. 1, the lone ng. diesel, was in the shop for repairs, and No. 9 was the backup locomotive for a few weeks. This was the last day of steam. Eight months later the ng. line itself was abandoned. This was the southern most part of the former Carson and Colorado (of "300 miles too far or 300 years too soon" fame).
