Amtrak #5, The California Zephyr, passes through Soda Springs, California, as it begins its long decent down Donner Pass. At this point the train is over 6000' in altitude, and the end of the trip is not far off, and near sea level. Amtrak 138 is the engine that was used on the John Kerry Whistlestop Tour in 2004 (click on the locomotive number field to find photos of it painted for that service).
