Remarks & Notes |
Onboard the Incan Superior. After my friends and I stumbled upon this ship, the crew was nice enough to invite us on board for the grand tour and unrestricted photo time. The gesture was much appreciated by 3 railfans from upstate NY. In this photo from the upper deck we see the loading process is nearing completion. I did a little research on this operation and found the following. The Incan Superior ran between Superior and Thunder Bay from 1974 until 1992 when low priced all land routes by CN and a step increase in Harbor Taxes made the operation non competitive. On average the ship made approx. 160 roundtrips each shipping season with a carrying capacity of 26 – 32 cars per trip. The ship could complete a roundtrip in approx. 26 hours. The ship was built for CP Rail subsidiary Incan Ships Ltd. in 1974. After 1992 it went to Vancouver and was rebuilt and renamed Princess Superior. |
