Remarks & Notes
"Board" crackles over the radio. The extraordinarily long, flawless Southern Crescent is OK to go. Two blasts from chime horn makes kids block their ears. Four polished gold and green E units rev up. In no time the varnish disappears from sight and makes me yearn to go to New Orleans.

The Southern Railway was one of three US railroads that decided not to join Amtrak in 1971. Its flagship train, the Southern Crescent, Washington - New Orleans, set the standard for passenger rail service in the US for most of the 1970s.
