Small town Columbus, Wisconsin, has two depots still standing. As the westbound Empire Builder whistles off, the depot seen in the background was built in the Civil War era, and for years has been part of the feed mill/lumber yard complex. The actual Amtrak depot, a Milwaukee Road structure standing since 1903, is out of view beyond the old depot seen here.
This train, which runs between Chicago and Seattle and Portland, takes its name from James J. Hill, who founded the Great Northern Railroad and extended it from Minnesota to the Pacific Coast.
