Who says big-time yard operations are an ugly unphotogenic mess? The very first rays of sunlight on a sub-freezing winter morning glaze the east Receiving Yard ladder at Selkirk Yard with a golden glow, turning what would otherwise be a mundane portrait of an everyday railroading scene into a work of art. Within 15 minutes, though, the sun would rise into the low cloud deck, spoiling the rest of the day -- not that I was around to see the rest of the day, mine having ended 45 minutes later when a brake line ruptured on the car I had borrowed from my Dad.
