Remarks & Notes
34067 Tangmere lays a smokescreen over the Thames Valley as it works an empty stock movement from Southall to Carnforth past Culham. The 3rd, 4th and 5th carriages in the train are some of the oldest in use on the national network. The 3rd is West Coast Joint Stock Observation Car No. 41, built by the London & North Western Railway in 1892. The 4th is Great Northern Railway Family Saloon No. 807 built in 1912. The 5th is London & North Western Railway Dining Car No. 5159 built in 1890 and is the oldest Dining Car in use in the world. During the First World War this vehicle was requisitioned by the Army and taken to France as part of a mobile HQ for Field Marshal Earl Haig. After its return it was used as part of a house before being rescued in 1978 and restored to service. This empty stock move was only reported via the enthusiast grapevine less than 24 hours prior to its departure. As a result few photographers were about to catch it. In fact I was the only person at this location, which is unheard of for a steam working
