The regular 'Cotton Mill Express' thunders along the Calder Valley towards Todmorden. Probably uniquely in Britain, the railway, road, river (Calder) and the Rochdale canal are all sandwiched into 100 yards of the valley floor atthis point. On the skyline is the church tower of St.Thomas the Apostle in the ancient and beautiful hill village of Heptonstall. The smokebox wreath respects the memory of Bernard Staite, pioneering champion of 'main line' steam who recently passed away and without whom magical scenes like this would probably be but a fantasy of imagination. R.I.P Bernard and thanks!
