Three Alaska RR SD70MACs (plus one more in DP mode on the rear) lead a southbound loaded coal train through Portage enroute to Seward for export to Asia. These export coal trains load at Healy on the north end of the railroad and make the 700+ mile round trip to Seward twice a week. The 50-mile stretch between Anchorage and Portage becomes quite busy during the summer with a mix of these coal trains, interchange barge freight traffic, and the normal passenger operations. Coal and steel don't go bad. This album features long, slow, heavy freight trains; drag freights, slop freights, dead freights, etc. Trains with lots of power, and lots of different cargo slogging along behind.
