The Great Orme in the holiday resort of Llandudno, North Wales, is a peninsular which is a mini mountain with beautiful views of the sea surrounding. A tramway was opened up the Orme to the summit in 1902. Today, the original cars are still used. The line climbs 400 feet in about half-a-mile. Here we see car no. 4 climbing the 1 in 4 section with the bay in the background. The tramway is cable operated, but differs from the San Francisco system in that it is a street funicular, where the cars are permanently fixed to the cable and are stopped and started by stopping and starting the cable. The line is in two stages; A lower line and an upper line, so that reaching the summit involves changing trams at a halfway point.
