If you're in the Raleigh-Durham area and want to run an engine, you're in luck. The NHVR's rent-a-loco program can put you behind the throttle of steam ($250) or diesel ($125) for an 8 mile run. Here 1941 Vulcan #17 charges through the Carolina woods under the watchful eyes of NHVR's head of steam, Mike MacLean, during a rental run.
