With the alpine sunrise in Hermosa, Colorado less than 15 minutes old, the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad's annual Fall Photo Special highballs north toward Silverton. Leading the charge today is K-28 #473, which is the only example of the type that is currently operational. Today's train is a mixed consist, with twin DRGW box cars just behind the locomotive carrying water tanks and fire fighting gear. The baggage express car behind that houses a rolling snack bar. Near the end of the consist, the odd-looking silver car is DSNG's glass-topped "Silver Vista" observation car, and bringing up the rear of this special train is a DRGW Caboose.
The Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad and the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad are all that remains of the legendary Denver & Rio Grande Western narrow gauge system. Here you'll find some of my favorites from these two beautiful railways.
