Remarks & Notes
Desert railraoding Chilean style
The FCAB is a privately own meter-gauge railroad. It carries mainly copper and sulfuric acid for the making of copper. This train comes from Mejillones. It is avoiding the city of Antofagasta by taking the Pampa to Prat shortcut. It is seen approaching the Cumbre summit. It has 3 engines on the front end and 2 helpers on the rear end that will be cut at Cumbre. It travels the Atacama desert, the driest place on Earth. The 1431 engine was built in 07-1965 by Clyde Engineering in Australia under licence from EMD for Westrail (WAGR). It was part of a batch of 7 similar engines sold to the FCAB in 1998. The FCAB modified them for service in the severe conditions of the desert. This model was initially a G12C and in the Australia Westrail classsification that meant a A class. It was wearing the WAGR number A1512 - Clyde 65-376.
