The daily run from Antonito to Chama blows for the Highway 17 crossing as it enters the yard at Cumbres Pass in an early season storm. Fortunately, the passengers and crew on this trip have seen the worst of the weather for the day. When the train leaves Cumbres Station in just a few minutes, it will descend rapidly as it travels the remaining 13 miles to Chama, NM. By the time it passes Coxo Crossing, just 2 miles west, the snow will be gone. When it enters the Chama Yard in about an hour, the sun will be out and this very early taste of winter will be just a chilly memory for the hundreds on board.
The Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad and the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad are all that remains of the legendary Denver & Rio Grande Western narrow gauge system. Here you'll find some of my favorites from these two beautiful railways.
