Remarks & Notes
In North Chile, in the Antofagasta - Calama region, the Atacama Desert contains stunningly beautiful landscapes that grow in beauty as one travels East toward the “Cordillera de los Andes” and the Bolivian border. For that reason San Pedro de Atacama is a famous tourist center from where people can reach exceptional geologic spots that take the form of volcanoes, valleys, geysers and dry salted lakes named “Salar”. But for the railfanning purpose there are no railroads around San Pedro de Atacama. However the Atacama Desert is huge and the railway line linking Antofagasta to Bolivia crosses (almost) similarly beautiful - although very remote - locations. Between the pre-border Chilean Carabinieri check point at Ascotàn and the border town of Ollague the FCAB trains travel in the middle of active and dormant volcanoes, and along “Salares”. On this picture a train of box cars full of export loads from Bolivia climbs out of the “Salar de Ascotàn”. The Salar is the flat expanse of white land on the right of the picture. The surrounding mountains display typical volcano shapes.

The front of the train is dark. This is just what makes the picture so good.
