Remarks & Notes
Cave Country….A sunny and warm late winter’s day (March 6th, 2010) finds southbound NS Intermodal train #939 passing by the long abandoned Cement Plant at Howes Cave, NY. A long time Howes Cave\Schoharie County Fixture. UP power has become a common sight once again on CP’s Albany & Susquehanna Subdivision and can be found on a regular basis as of this writing on trains #939/#938 and #934/#935. Future plans for the cement plant and still operating quarry which is owned by Emil Galassao owner of Cobleskill Stone Products and Howe Caverns call for a working museum dedicated to mining and geology and the eventual expansion of the current cave tour to the original cave entrance discovered by Lester Howe in 1842 which is located behind the Cave House Museum located in the 1845 Howe Cave House formerly serving as a Hotel and then offices to the cement plant.
