| LS&I 1804,1801,1807 slowly ease into Eagle Mills with 65 loads of ore from Mather B mine in Negaunee headed to the pellet plant at Eagle Mills. This is the last full year for this operation as the Mather B, the last underground iron mine in Michigan will be closed the following year along with the pellet plant this train is heading to. Notice the trail of pellets nearly to the top of the rails and the broken rail just to the left of the lead unit. No doubt it came from the short section of rail just in front of the train. Also of interest is the rather huge plow on 1804 and how the paint scheme on the units more or less matches the pigment of iron ore dust. |
