Unlike the Santa Fe Texas-types, PRR's coal-burning 2-10-4's (PRR Class J1a) could fit on the table as their tenders were shorter. #6494 was assigned to the Columbus terminal for Sandusky coal service, and goes for a spin in front of John's camera. At least one other railroad in the Columbus area used the Texas-type, the C&O, hauling coal drags was big business north-south through this area at the time. Two PRR locomotives would ordinarily be assigned the run to Sandusky, account of the stiff grade leaving Columbus northward. Reportedly, the ATSF locos were appreciated by the PRR crews in the terminal, and made better time over the road (as legend goes). For more color views from that day, click here
