Remarks & Notes
The early "beginnings" of the Conemaugh line lie below the mainline iron bridge. This stone arch bridge built in the early 1900's, was to provide, like today, a low grade bypass realignment to Pittsburgh for heavy freights. PRR realigned the mainline once again and thus, we have the iron bridge standing above the old PRR North West RR mainline (now a trail leading to bow tunnel) and the Conemaugh River. Unlike the bypass which ran trains both East and West, the NS Conemaugh Line besides detours runs trains primarily in an East direction to eliminate the need of helper service right out of Pittsburgh.
