Remarks & Notes
RRL Grindrod's locomotives are employed to haul ore from two of Harmony Gold's mines. Two of their ex-TFR Class 91's bask in the late afternoon sun at Transnet Freight Rail's Welkom station with their trains of empties, waiting for their next shift. The class 91’s were built by GE and imported from the USA in the 1970’s for the 610mm (2’0”) gauge line from Port Elizabeth to Avontuur, home of the famous Apple Express (see photo ID 328605). With the line seeing little traffic these days, some of these loco’s were up for sale and have ended up here, working on 1067mm (3’6”) gauge. Their original bogies were widened to accommodate the change in gauge.
