A UP North Platte, NE to Provo, UT coal empty heads east through Utah's Jordan River Narrows about 20 miles south of downtown Salt Lake City. Utah Transit Authority is building a 45 mile commuter rail line between SLC and Provo running parallel to UP's Provo Subdivision. With new rail construction, the terrain along the widened right of way has been altered for the first time in more than a century. The track in the foreground (now disconnected) is the actual UP (ex-D&RGW) main which will soon be scrapped and UTA's new commuter rail line will be built on the old right of way.
