The primary power on Connecticut's Valley Railroad is this 87-ton Mikado, built in 1920 by Alco's Brooks Works for the Portland, Astoria & Pacific RR as their #101. In 1935, she was sold to the Aberdeen & Rockfish Railroad in North Carolina, where she received the #40 and spent the war years hauling troops and equipment to and from Ft. Bragg. She was retired in 1952 and stored by the A&R until she was sold to the Valley Railroad in 1977. She's been hauling tourist trains there ever since. In this photo, she can be seen running light in the Deep River Yard on a pretty October afternoon.
