| 'Scots Guardsman' gets under way from a brief stop at Settle station, hauling 'The Waverley' and heading over the S&C route for Carlisle. In the background is the road bridge spanning the River Ribble. The Midland Railway completed the railway in 1876 in order to provide a more direct route from Leeds to Scotland. The Midland had tried to back out of their proposal when they realised the cost implications, but the government had sanctioned the construction and forced them to proceed - thank goodness! |
