Remarks & Notes
This is the haunt of my youth. I spent many a long hour on this fine brick arch bridge that carries Addingford Lane over the railway. Back then it was the scene of a constant procession of east and west bound freight. The motive power for freight was usually '4F' 0-6-0s or 'WD' and '8F' 2-8-0s with occasional exotica on the passenger turns such as 'Jubilee' or 'B1' 4-6-0s. The line was four track, beautifully maintained and not a weed in sight! The line of trees under the bridge on the left was the site of the interchange yard from Hartley Bank colliery about a mile away. This line was plied by a couple of small industrial locos bringing coal to the main line for onward movement. At the end of each shift the miners with faces blackened from their toils would come trudging homeward. Their greetings in local Yorkshire dialect are etched in fond memory. "Ay up lad. Nah then me owd China - as ta copped ony good 'uns?" Translation available on request!
