Autumn comes to the high country! A mere 3 days after the official end of summer, the Colorado high country already looks like it's late November. In this scene, an eastbound Cumbres & Toltec train from Chama, NM to Antonito, CO drifts through the famous Tanglefoot Curve, just a mile or so after topping the 10,000 ft high Cumbres Pass. An early season snow storm the day before has deposited about 4 inches of the white stuff on everything, providing a gentle reminder to both the tourists and the railroaders that the excursion season on this line is rapidly drawing to a close.
The Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad and the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad are all that remains of the legendary Denver & Rio Grande Western narrow gauge system. Here you'll find some of my favorites from these two beautiful railways.
