Remarks & Notes
An ARR yard job trundles south at MP 119.8 on the ARR mainline crossing the Davis Hwy. on Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson. The gondolas were loaded with contaminated dirt from the military base that is being shipped to a disposal site on the UP in Washington. Over 20 carloads were shipped south providing a bit of traffic on the usually dormant Ft. Richardson base trackage which diverges from the mainline just out of sight to the left of this photo. Sharp eyes will notice some white structures at the top of the peak in the distance. This is Site Summit, one of the most fully intact remaining former NIKE Hercules missile installations remaining in the country. Hundreds of these sites once dotted the country during the early years of the Cold War. Largely supplanted by ICBMs, Site Summit was one of the last to be closed in 1979. In 1995 it was listed on the National Historic Register. To learn more click here.
