The Reading Subway II: As early as 1895, space was becoming a premium in Philadelphia so the Reading Company, aka, the Reading & Philadelphia, lowered one of its lines through the city. This line at one time provided not only service to the Baldwin Locomotive shops, but also went on to connect to the Reading main which crossed Vine Street (expressway) and terminated at the Reading Terminal in the heart of town. It was abandoned in the mid-eighties when the Philadelphia Inquirer newspaper switched from rail to trucks for all of its deliveries. Special thanks to one time RP'r Matt Blaze for inspiration.
