Walking on water: Wielding a "calibrated ballast density meter," fellow RP contributor Bob Harbison inspects the over-topped track ahead of Polson #70 on a rainy Sunday evening. Passengers on this oft-delayed excursion train from Tacoma to not-quite-Eatonville lean out of the open-sided passenger car to gaze at the spectacle of the train tip-toeing down the inundated track. Nearly an inch of rain was dumped upon the Cascade foothills over the preceding 24 hours, sending Lake Kapowsin over its banks and, utterly ignoring the railroad's levee, overflowing the Tacoma Rail Mountain Division mainline south of Kapowsin. In addition to the flooding, the train also encountered and conquered two downed trees before finally being stopped by a landslide only a couple miles north of its intended Eatonville destination. My compliments to the MRSR and TRMW crews for doing an outstanding job keeping this train moving and overcoming almost all the obstacles thrown at it by Mother Nature; it sure made for an enjoyable afternoon of photography.
