Each July, the horse racing season comes to San Diego County's Del Mar Racetrack. And with it, increased ridership on Amtrak's Surf Line, and to handle the increased crowds one train set of older cars is placed into service between Los Angeles and San Diego (in order to allow one train set of Pacific Surfliner cars to be broken up to lengthen other trains on the line). In 2011, former F40PH-turned-cab car 90230 (originally Amtrak 230), painted in the Pacific Northwest's attractive Cascades scheme, traveled south to lend an assist. Northbound Amtrak Pacific Surfliner #583, running nearly forty minutes late (due, in large part, to longer station stops necessitated by the older cars), zips through the Metrolink station in Orange, California, on July 21, 2011.
