Remarks & Notes
Full Circle
Completed wheel sets sit on the ground and await installation on coal hoppers in the back. The ground they are sitting on used to be home to the famous Abex Corporation wheel casting foundry in Calera, AL which later became ABC Rail in 1987. Casting freight wheels in sizes of 28”, 33”, 36” and 38”, this railroad wheel manufacture would cast some of the best wheels in the industry but would ultimately succumb to the harsh effects of the economy and cast it last wheels in early 2000. The former plant has since become a repair facility for freight cars.
