| Another unseen image from 83 years ago finds ex-London & North Western Railway 'Prince of Wales' class inside cylinder 4-6-0 at the same location as my previous posting, but looking in the opposite direction. The unknown photographer notes that 'Arabic', built at Crewe in 1916 is hauling a milk train. This 246-strong class were built between 1911 and 1924 had once been 'cutting edge' but gradually became relegated to secondary duties as they were ousted by newer designs. Most (like Arabic) served a mere 20 years and some less than a dozen! Only 15 lasted beyond WW2 and the last survivor went for scrap in 1949. Many carried names of now forgotten dignitaries, figures from mythology and the orient. I asked if any viewer recognised the location, so my thanks go to Keith Long and Brian Stephenson whose combined detective work suggested that Kensal Green Station is just to the rear of this southbound train, confirmed by Google maps. Great detective work fellas! |
