On July 24, 1981, the Rio Grande Zephyr train #18 rolls to a stop at the D&RGW depot in Helper, Utah. The head end crew will change out and a few passengers will climb on board for the 450 mile journey east to Denver, Colorado. Note the former UP diner behind the combine, utilized while the Silver Banquet dining car underwent major repairs in Denver. If you look closely, the Wilson McCarthy business car is coupled on the rear of the train. This particular #18 was one of the few times I witnessed the RGZ where half of the equipment was painted in Aspen Gold and silver livery. The Steam Generator car would have broken the tie, but would have been quite an unlikely addition to the consist on this warm July morning.
