The renewed locomotives emerged from Dundalk Works in May 1938. The five original 1913-built engines were provided with new, heavier frames, new 200lb/psi boilers and new 19" x 26" cylinders. No.173 was paired with a 3,500 gallon tender. The weight was 53 tons 6 cwt. One class 'S' has been preserved by the Railway Preservation Society of Ireland. The locomotive seen behind No.173 is a 'V' class 4-4-0 No.87 'Kestrel'.
