Looking a whole lot like UP's Sandy Local, a Salt Lake City Southern 'Draper turn' glides north along the former Union Pacific Provo Subdivision at 100th South in Sandy. On April 14, 1993, the SLCS took over UP freight operations when 25 miles of the old Provo Sub were sold to the Utah Transit Authority for a planned light rail route. Pictured on June 1, 1993, the UP 1570 with 9 cars rambles through a shallow cut where the Sandy Civic Center light rail station would one day be constructed. To begin operations, the UP leased a GP15-1 to the SLCS for a reported $175 a day until an ex-Cotton Belt SW1200 arrived from NREX leasing. The Salt Lake City Southern was at the time, a subsidiary of Railtex. By 1999, the SLCS became a subsidiary of the Utah Railway Company (Genesee & Wyoming), operating nocturnally when TRAX light rail is shut down for the night.
