Remarks & Notes
On a crisp morning and in beautiful light comes forth a legend - quite literally! The fable of King Arthur provided the inspiration for the names bestowed on the twenty London and South Western Railway's N15 class of 4-6-0s introduced in August 1918. Strangely, King Arthur himself was not one of the names chosen! After the 1923 grouping, the Southern Railway built a further fifty four (including 'King Arthur'). The final member of this elegant class emerged from Eastleigh works in January 1927. Certainly, prior to the marvelous 'Black 5s' of the LMS, the 'Arthurs' were amongst Britain's finest 4-6-0s. 'Sir Lamiel' is one of the so-called 'Scotch Arthurs' because it was one of a batch of thirty built by North British Loco. Co. in Glasgow.
