Alpine Sunset at Scales. Literally minutes from losing the late afternoon sunlight over the peaks to the west, the V&T's Locomotive 29 and her pretty trainset take their last bows for the Lerro Productions Charter at Scales. Scales is located in the hills west of Silver City at a remote location called American Flat. On the original V&T, there were indeed "scales" located here to weigh ore trains departing for the mills to the south. In addition, this was a water stop for trains traveling between Carson City and Virginia City. In the railroad's hey-day, there were as many as 40 per day...a virtual railfan paradise. The scales are long gone, but the footings of the original tank remain, in the sagebrush, just a few yards down track.
