Growing up in Mount Airy, Maryland, I'd ride into town with my Dad and along the way we would pass the Cold Storage Facility there. Every once in a while we'd stop and watch as an old switcher would work the facility. It would grind its steel wheels on the rail and halt, push and pull, it was a workhorse. This was that switcher. It moved up here in 1995 and the facility in Mt. Airy closed in 2007. Now in Chambersburg, PA it sits on a siding, not having been used but serving as a reminder to at least one grown up of a days gone by as a boy sitting in the car with his Dad watching it work its magic. SW1, Class DS-3, was built by Electro-Motive on August 14, 1940, #1109. It was reclassified Class DS-3E in 1943 and renumbered 8411, Class SE-1, in 1957. It was sold as Winchester & Western RR 8411 in 1964 and resold as Mt Airy Cold Storage Co 8411 in 1985.
An attempt to put the best picture of engines that represent each of America's railroads. When a better picture of an engine/type is found, it will be added.
